Shitty 1st drafts

This tittle made me want to read more. I have not read many things with a swear word in the tittle, but I guess there is a 1st time for everything. I think the author was right when she explained that everyone writes "shitty" 1st drafts, even the greatest authors that we all love, but this did not make me feel better about writing a horrible 1st draft. I think it's because I like to think that once I write something I finish, and it's over. That's how I have come to see writing, as task that I want to finish a.s.a.p., and the idea of having to reread, and then rewrite just make me feel kind of hopeless, and depressed about writing.

I like to believe that a "good" writer has the ability to write, and write well, but this author disagrees, by explaining that very few writers pour out great sentences in their 1st drafts, she even continues to say that the only way that she can write is to write really, really shitty drafts. I guess shes right, however, I would still like to think that great writers just have a talent that the general public lack. Maybe, it's a little bit of both.

Shattered Glass

  1. In the movie "Shattered Glass" I noticed a few processes of writing that the reporters used. Knowing your audience seemed to be a a factor, because if you don't know who your writing for than you as a writer will have problems with developing a story, or a paper. Another important process was recording. Glass seemed to have made this process one of the most important things for reporters to do. I think recording was of importance because sometimes as we are beginning to in the movie, writers are forced to prove their stories. Another process of writing is observation e.g. taking notes about a situation without getting involved.
  2. The characters in this movie collect their data in many ways, for example taking notes.
  3. When the main character asks for help on his article from his friends also when, he lies about his sources

In Class Blogging: My Social Epidemic/Favorite Chapter

If I were to start a social epidemic in my community it would have to getting people to build up their social skills. I know this might sound strange but, I feel like people in this generation a socially challenge, and are unaware of how to communicate with people. Communication has lost its meaning, I think. People only seem to communicate through the use of "facebook" "myspace" "Twitter," and other social networking sites. Also texting is a contributing factor too.

These means of communication were designed to bring people together but I think it does the opposite. People walk pass by each other in the oak grove but then they will facebook you and ask you to be their friend, which does not make any sense to me.

I think that if people were to become more invovled with people outdoors, e.g. when they see them in person vs. over the internet than it would be better. I think I can help tip this by disconnecting social networking sites. I know that it sound drastic but I think the benefits could be drastic and great as well.

I don't know about any of the chapter's being influential however, the first chapter was interesting, because of what Gladwell is expressing. He talks about the three rules of epidemics, which is the first time I have ever heard a theory like the one he suggests. Also, I only chose this chapter because after this chapter he, Gladwell just reinstate his theory and adds some points of examples to help "prove" his idea.

I-Search

Finding infromation on this topic was difficult. However, I knew that before I began my research. I do believe that researching this topic for this class has been different from my previous research classes. In my previous research classes students are provided with a subject pool, so I guess in retrospect this was more realistic experience for a student researcher. I have learned how much more exhausting research can become, and how difficult it can be in terms of obtaining participants to conduct your research. From this I believe incentives are needed.

I have realized that people or society is more objective than I first assumed. When I began my research I thought people would shun the idea of allowing people who are inter-sex have another category. However, after obtaining my results I discover otherwise. I was surprised and happy, at the idea that people could be objective to the idea. However, I do believe that these results occurred because my participants were from a college campus. I think people who are in college tend to be more liberal and open minded to ideas about sex, homosexuality, etc. I think that my results could have been different if I had the opportunity to question people outside of the IUP campus. I should have thought about this before, and I think I will mention it in my limitations part of my paper.

To find my research on my topic I used IUP EBSCOHost. This database has numerous articles, on my topic, and other areas of research, I know this because I have used it in my other research classes. This topic was of interest to me because I am a firm supporter of Human rights. I found mostly journal articles for my sources of information. I think my views on the topic remained the same even after reading the research on the subject. I think my biggest problem with my social action project has been getting people to participate in my study.

Activity Thirty-three

On afternoon after school my older brother and I walked home from school. We lived in Southwest Philadelphia, and our school was about 10 blocks from our house. As we journeyed home, we squeezed each other’s hand and ran most of the way. I was six, and my older brother was seven.

Before deciding to walk home that afternoon by ourselves, my older brother and I waited for our mother for almost a half hour. Once the school yard was cleared and we saw no sign of her we began walking home. I was terrified because we didn’t live in the safest neighborhood. I believed my brother was afraid as well however, he never showed it.

class exercise

Due to using too many direct quotations in note taking, about 10% of students writing final research papers use unnecessary direct quotations. However, students can decrease this by not using "exact transcribing" when reviewing source material (author, pg number, date).

Summary of Intro/Chapter 1

Hush puppies were not a brand of shoes that were popular among "fashionitas" or the people within the fashion society. This remained the same until a few kids from the East Village and Soho decided to wear the shoes, and they decided this because no one else wanted to wear them. However, these few help the company tip, and Hush puppies became wanted and wore by everyone.

The intro also talks about crime decline in NYC, and how people in NYC get infected by the anti-crime virus. However, I thought this argument, he tried to make was more complex then he allowed readers to believe. It was however, interesting to read the how the crime in NYC just came to halt.

"big changes occur from small events" -Gladwell, this quote from the 1st chapter allows readers in my opinion to see the bigger picture of the authors point in terms of the intro and chapter 1. Throughout the intro and chapter 1 Gladwell continues to examine how events tip, or how an event/epidemic, can go from just a select few to millions people.
